Read on aromatherapy enthusiasts...
Well, this is from one aromatherapy enthusiast to another ![]()
But in case you need to know a little more, here goes…
I studied Somatology (the fancy term for Beauty Therapy) for three years, and yes, I know what you’re thinking…three years to learn about nails and make-up!! Well, apart from having to learn the obvious, other subjects included anatomy and physiology (can you believe we started doing 3rd year medical student A&P in our 1st year!), business practice, science, socio-phsychology, computer skills, nutrition, first aid…to name a few.
While studying, it was compulsory to get experience by working in a salon, which I thouroughly enjoyed, but did get quite physically tiring most days (I did a lot of massage). After graduating, I was approached by the head of the Somatology department to work as a clinician (the Soma department has a clinic where treatments are offered to the public). Basically, I ran the clinic and had to oversee that the each student working in the clinic was doing so correctly. And yes, that entailed dealing with clients; happy, irate and in-between! I did this for about a 3 years or so, and during that time, was asked to be a stand-in lecturer when the full-timers were on study-leave (believe it or not, you can get your degree and masters in Somatology!). Subsequently, I was asked to lecture full-time on one of the new holistic subjects and did this for about 3 years. I have since left the department to further my studies (in a completely different field), while working as an intern
Come to think about it, I have been at the company as an intern for 2 years now!
I am happy to say though, that I have always kept my foot in the door with holistic and natural therapies, and from time to time, I still get calls from my ex-collegues when they are on study-leave and need me to lecture for them.
Aromatherapy has definitely been one of my favourite of the holistic therapies! It’s so versatile and easy to implement in my every day life, so I thought that I’d share some of my knowledge with others who want to involve aromatherapy into their lives (hectic as it may be), but without too much complication!
